Plantar Fascitis - Case Profile
Profile
A 35-year-old runner, with heel pain and plantar fasciitis. Her symptoms were worse in the morning and were exacerbated after standing all day at work.
Treatment
The plantar fascia is a complex arrangement of longitudinal and lateral collagen fibers under the foot that is the primary support of the medial longitudinal arch. Postural analysis revealed a flattened arch and client was initially referred to a podiatrist for orthotic consultation.
NMT treatment focused on extension the calf muscles, gastrocnemius and soleus, with moderate friction treatment at the ligament attachment on the heel. Icing and eccentric calf stretching also were recommended, as was sleeping with a night splint. Once inflammation calmed down, deeper tissue treatment on the foot was tolerated.
Result
Eight NMT sessions, in combination with arch support, shoe correction and stretching, alleviated symptoms. 360 NMT also has been successful in resolving secondary plantar fasciitis that can develop post-operatively.
