Piriformis Syndrome - Case Profile

Profile
38-year-old female client slipped and fell on ice. She came to 360 NMT two months later with persistent pain in her lower back and buttocks. Additionally she experienced intra-pelvic pain during intercourse, for which her gynecologist prescribed numbing cream.

Treatment
The piriformis muscle can cause bizarre symptoms that may seem unrelated. In this case, the client had multiple reasons to develop piriformis syndrome:
1) Trauma to SI joint with the fall
2) She sat all day at a desk for work, causing compression and ischemia in the buttocks
3) Taut bands in the piriformis sourced myofascial referred pain into the pelvis

Result
After two sessions, the internal pelvic pain was gone. Treatment to deep lateral hip rotators reduced gluteal and low back symptoms. Client was referred to a chiropractor for sacral adjustment, which further improved her lower back pain. Active-Isolated Stretching was recommended to maintain hip length. After eight treatments, she was pain-free.
